My Food Rules: EAT FOOD. ENJOY EATING IT!

I get asked all of the time, “What diet do you recommend?” and my answer is, quite simply, I recommend the “EAT FOOD DIET”.  Yep, that’s it. My very Simple Food Rules are 1. EAT FOOD. 2.  ENJOY EATING IT.
So what exactly do I mean by “EAT FOOD”? Well, before you buy, order or eat any food-type product, check out the ingredients list. (If the food doesn’t come in a package or even have an ingredients list, GREAT! That means it’s likely REAL, HONEST-TO-GOD FOOD in it’s original form. EAT IT!) Scan the ingredient list for any of the following ingredients. If you see them, STOP. PUT THE ITEM DOWN….IT IS NOT FOOD! Eating it will not promote your health, and will likely promote disease. So here’s my list of easy things to look for that will help you answer the question “IS IT FOOD?”:

  1. Hydrogenated or Partially Hydrogenated Vegetable Oils (AKA Trans Fat or Margarine)
  2. High Fructose Corn Syrup
  3. Artificial Sugars: Aspartame (Equal, Nutrasweet), Sucralose (Splenda), Saccharin (Sweet’NLow, SugarTwin), Acesulfame K (Sunett, Sweet One, Neotame)
  4. Artificial Colors, Dyes, or Flavors
  5. Enriched bleached or brominated flour…..it is NO LONGER FOOD!

If ANY of these ingredients show up in the ingredient list, it is a sure give away that the item IS NOT FOOD….instead it’s a food-like substance (to quite Michael Pollan), packaging cheap ingredients that were probably the left-over by-product of some other process , and then adding laboratory derived fats, sugars and chemicals to make it look, smell and taste like food. Tasty ?….I think not!
Remember, the job of the food companies is to sell products and make the most money, NOT make you healthy!  So that means it’s up to you to determine if what you are eating will contribute to your health, or contribute to disease.
So READ LABELS…and start by simply asking yourself “IS IT FOOD?”. If it is, then ENJOY EATING IT! Which will be the focus of my next blog……stay tuned!

Until then, Eat food. Eat well!
